Orangutans spotted in Odisha; wildlife trafficking suspected

Critically endangered orangutans—a species not found in India—have been spotted in Odisha, prompting wildlife authorities to launch an investigation into suspected international trafficking.
The state forest and wildlife department will examine whether an organised wildlife trafficking network was responsible for bringing the animals into the state. Orangutans are native to Southeast Asia and are protected under international law, making their presence in India highly unusual and concerning.
The discovery has raised alarm about potential illegal trade in endangered species operating across borders.
