Pranavi Urs becomes first Indian woman golfer to win Asian Games gold
Pranavi Urs on Saturday became the first Indian woman golfer to win an individual gold medal at the Asian Games, holding onto a slender one-stroke lead in the final round to create history. The 23-year-old from Mysore recovered from a difficult start to the final round, making three birdies after a triple bogey on the third hole had wiped out her three-stroke overnight lead. She carded an even-par 70 in the final round to finish with a four-day total of 15-under 265, one stroke clear of the chasing pack.
Her performance also proved crucial to India's team silver medal, with Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar joining her in the women's team event. Aditi shot 67 in the final round, while Diksha carded 77. The two best scores from the three-member team counted towards the team medal, with India finishing at 14-under 546. China won gold with a total of 22-under 538.
Pranavi's individual gold was India's first in Asian Games golf since Shiv Kapur won the men's individual title in 2002. She is now the first Indian woman to claim the top prize in the individual golf event at the continental Games.
