Bombay High Court Allows Preity Zinta To Sue Platforms Over AI-Generated Content

Actress Preity Zinta has secured permission from the Bombay High Court to file an injunction suit against online platforms including Meta and Google. The actress alleged that these platforms created, uploaded and disseminated content generated through artificial intelligence using her likeness, violating her personality rights, copyright and moral rights under the Copyright Act, 1957.
Justice Abhay Ahuja's single-judge bench granted her plea for patent permission despite noting that some respondent parties operated outside Mumbai's jurisdiction. The court confirmed it would retain authority to hear, examine and dispose of the suit.
The case reflects growing concerns over AI-generated deepfakes targeting celebrities. Several actors including Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff and Salman Khan have previously obtained court protection against personality rights violations. Zinta is currently preparing for her upcoming film 'Batwara 1947'.
