Pakistan boycotts Israel in Chess Olympiad, cites non-recognition policy

Pakistan's chess federation declined to play Israel in the opening round of the 2026 Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, resulting in a 4-0 walkover for Israel. The federation attributed the decision to Pakistan's government policy of not recognising Israel and stated it was also meant to demonstrate solidarity with Palestinians.
Official statements from Pakistan emphasised that the boycott reflected state policy rather than any reflection on the sportsman spirit of individual players or the sport itself.
