Assam's Rangpur-Sivasagar Ensemble Nominated for UNESCO World Heritage Status

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Rangpur-Sivasagar Ensemble, the historic capital of the Ahom dynasty, has been formally submitted to UNESCO for World Heritage status. India's Permanent Mission to UNESCO submitted the nomination on June 19, 2026, under UNESCO criteria (iii) and (iv).
The ensemble showcases the architectural and cultural legacy of the Ahom kingdom, which ruled the Brahmaputra Valley for six centuries. Key monuments include Rang Ghar (Asia's oldest surviving amphitheatre), historic palaces, temples, and water tanks that represent Ahom engineering prowess.
Sarma noted this complements the 2024 UNESCO recognition of Charaideo Moidams, stating together they complete the Ahom narrative. The Rangpur-Sivasagar complex, located in Sivasagar district about 360 km northeast of Guwahati, reflects the dynasty's distinctive architectural and cultural achievements.
