Remembering Rev. Beilieü Shüya and Aunty Rano Shaiza

The author recalls the passing of Rev. Beilieü Shüya and reflects on events from January 30, 1992, when eleven people—nine members of the Naga National Council/Federal Government of Nagaland and two international observers—were arrested by Assam Rifles at Meluri in Eastern Nagaland. One member, Neipielie Chucha, was shot and killed at the scene.
Following arrest, detainees faced interrogation and torture at multiple Army camps. They were held blindfolded for thirteen days at Jessami Army Camp in winter conditions with minimal bedding. One international observer, Stephen Hillman, was later released but died in London after not fully recovering from his injuries. Three NNC/FGN members also died prematurely afterward.
The remaining detainees were transferred to Imphal Central Jail in Manipur. The author credits Aunty Rano Shaiza with visiting them at both Jessami and Imphal, offering spiritual support and a Bible that provided comfort during detention.
