Ronaldo Goalless As Messi, Mbappe, Haaland Shine in World Cup 2026

Cristiano Ronaldo made history as the oldest outfield player to start a World Cup match, equalling Paolo Maldini's record of 23 tournament appearances. However, the Portuguese veteran's landmark occasion ended in disappointment as Portugal drew 1-1 with DR Congo on Wednesday, with Ronaldo failing to score or inspire his side to victory.
The draw came hours after Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland delivered record-breaking performances. Messi scored a hat-trick in Argentina's 3-0 win over Algeria, becoming the oldest player to score three goals in a World Cup match and moving level with Miroslav Klose's all-time scoring record. Mbappe netted twice in France's 3-1 victory over Senegal, taking his World Cup tally to 14 goals, while Haaland scored twice in Norway's win over Iraq.
