Shawl dispute sparks heated exchange in Karnataka Legislative Council

A debate on drought in the Karnataka Legislative Council escalated into a political dispute on Wednesday after BJP MLC Naveen Kottige donned a green shawl while speaking on farmers' issues. Congress MLC S Ravi questioned the timing of the gesture, suggesting it appeared staged for publicity. Naveen countered by referencing Chief Minister DK Shivakumar's attire, prompting Ravi to defend the CM's personal style while criticizing what he called Naveen's "showoff attitude".
The exchange intensified as BJP members raised slogans against the government, accusing it of being "anti-farmer". Ruling party members entered the well of the House in protest, leading to heated exchanges and near-physical confrontation. The Chairman briefly adjourned proceedings. When business resumed, both MLCs clarified their remarks—Naveen said he was highlighting the lack of announced drought assistance, while Ravi claimed his initial comment was made in jest.
