Telangana Human Rights Commission seeks report on elderly woman's torture

The Telangana Human Rights Commission has initiated suo motu action following media reports of an alleged assault on an elderly woman, Sheikh Shakinabi, in Jinkalagudem village. According to reports, she was subjected to physical torture on suspicion of being possessed by an evil spirit, including being beaten with whips and having nails driven under her hands and feet. The incident occurred in July but came to light recently after videos circulated on social media.
The commission expressed concern that the allegations, if proven true, would violate the woman's right to life, dignity, and protection from cruel treatment. It has directed the Bhadradri Kothagudem district collector to submit a detailed report covering the circumstances, the victim's current condition, medical treatment provided, and action taken against those involved. The matter has been scheduled for hearing on October 27.
