Kerala CM's plan to shift Thiruvananthapuram Zoo sparks debate over heritage and animal welfare

Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan has proposed shifting Thiruvananthapuram Zoo from the city centre to forest fringes near Neyyar or Palode, triggering a debate over the future of the 55-acre landmark. The zoo is seen as a repository of history, heritage and urban biodiversity in the capital.
The proposal has divided stakeholders. BJP Mayor V V Rajesh supports the relocation, citing opportunities for a more natural animal habitat and redevelopment of the current site. The Left has opposed it, alleging vested interests. Health Minister K Muraleedharan backed the CM's plan, stating the zoo would move near Neyyar Dam.
Experts and conservationists have raised concerns about infrastructure, heritage preservation and biodiversity management. Former resident veterinary doctor Dr Jacob Alexander questioned whether Kerala has the professional capacity and funding to manage such a facility, citing failures in similar projects like Neyyar Lion Safari Park.
