Ujjain Mosque Demolition Halted After Protests During Road-Widening Project

Work to remove portions of Madina Masjid and Jamiatul Quraish Qassaban Masjid began in Ujjain on Tuesday as part of the Nikas Chauraha-Bada Pull road-widening project ahead of Simhastha 2028. A large police contingent was deployed alongside Municipal Corporation teams during the operation.
Members of the Muslim community protested as demolition commenced, leading to heated exchanges with police. The mosque committees stated the structures are over 100 years old and sought to preserve at least 2-3 feet of the buildings. Additional police were deployed to prevent escalation.
Following discussions between administration and community representatives, further action has been temporarily suspended. Shaher Qazi Khaliqur Rahman said the matter would be discussed in a meeting, with decisions to be made accordingly. The administration stated all parties were cooperating for Simhastha preparations.
