UP Legislative Council Elections: A Test for Akhilesh to Retain the Leader of Opposition Post

In Uttar Pradesh, elections for 11 seats of the Legislative Council (5 graduate and 6 teacher constituencies) will be held on October 23. Only teacher and graduate voters take part in these elections. The contest is a battle of prestige between the ruling NDA and the opposition Samajwadi Party.
In the 100-member Upper House, the SP needs at least 10 seats to retain the post of Leader of the Opposition. For Akhilesh Yadav, winning in this election is extremely important. On the other hand, the NDA holds 83 seats, and this is an opportunity for it to strengthen its grip among teachers and young voters.
