Uttar Pradesh may delay UCC rollout until after 2027 elections

Despite Home Minister Amit Shah's push to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) across NDA-ruled states by 2029, Uttar Pradesh may strategically delay its rollout until after the 2027 Assembly elections. The move is aimed at preventing narrative polarisation that could benefit the opposition Samajwadi Party (SP), which strongly opposes the code.
Implementing the UCC now could consolidate the crucial Muslim-Yadav demographic behind the SP. By delaying the legislation, the government hopes to ensure the upcoming electoral battle remains focused on development and governance rather than emotive religious issues.
