Vedanta revives Niyamgiri mining push, proposes ₹1 lakh crore Odisha investment

Vedanta has renewed its push to revive the Niyamgiri bauxite mining project in Odisha, proposing an investment of ₹1 lakh crore in the state. The project was shelved in 2013 after the Dongria Kondh community, a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group, unanimously rejected it through Gram Sabha resolutions—a move hailed as India's first environmental referendum.
The mining venture faced strong local resistance over environmental and tribal land concerns. Vedanta's fresh proposal aims to address state development priorities, though the company's ability to overcome previous community opposition remains uncertain.
