West Kochi faces acute water crisis as pipelines burst, supply falters

West Kochi is experiencing an acute water crisis stemming from burst pipelines and inconsistent water supply. Residents across Palluruthy, Vaduthala, Pachalam and other localities report acute shortages, with authorities unable to compensate through tanker supply. The situation has worsened even as monsoon season ends and water consumption rises.
The Kochi corporation's Pazhoor Drinking Water Project, designed to source water from Muvattupuzha river, has failed to meet rising demand due to frequent pipe ruptures. Allegations also persist that water intended for West Kochi is being diverted to areas like Thevara and Thammanam. The crisis has extended to essential services—Palluruthy Taluk Hospital nearly curtailed dialysis treatment before intervention from the division councillor averted the situation.
Kerala Water Authority officials attributed the disruption to multiple pipeline breaks across localities including Thrikkakara and technical issues at the Maradu water facility. The region, situated below sea level, has historically battled severe water scarcity.
