World Bank Study on Gulf Returnees' Gender Views Triggers Kerala Debate

A World Bank research paper has reignited discussion in Kerala about the relationship between Gulf migration and gender attitudes. The study, titled "Beyond Money: Does Migration Experience Transfer Gender Norms? Empirical Evidence from Kerala, India," analyzes whether returnees from Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations show shifts in their views on gender-related issues.
The findings revealed notable differences by destination country. Returnees from Saudi Arabia displayed more conservative positions on gender-based violence and attitudes toward violence against women. However, those returning from other Gulf countries were found to be less conservative on average compared to non-migrants.
The World Bank has clarified that the research represents academic analysis and does not constitute official policy positions of the organization.
