72 lakh teachers trained to identify students with disabilities using digital tool

India has trained 72 lakh teachers to use a digital screening tool aimed at identifying students with disabilities, marking a significant step towards inclusive education. Teachers are set to deploy this month to spot observable behaviours in students that may indicate learning or developmental challenges.
Once initial screening is completed by teachers, special educators will step in to formally categorise identified students under 21 recognised disability categories. This two-tier approach combines frontline teacher observation with specialist assessment.
The initiative prioritises early detection and timely intervention, recognising that identifying disabilities at the school stage enables students to access appropriate support and accommodations. Officials view the programme as crucial for advancing inclusive education across Indian schools, ensuring that students with disabilities receive necessary resources and attention within mainstream classrooms.
