83% of anxiety sufferers in India go untreated despite condition being manageable
A significant treatment gap persists in India's mental health landscape, with data showing that 83 per cent of individuals suffering from anxiety disorders do not receive treatment, despite the condition being highly treatable.
The figure underscores the substantial disconnect between those affected by anxiety and access to mental health care services. Anxiety disorders, which are among the most common mental health conditions, respond well to various therapeutic and pharmacological interventions when properly administered.
Experts attribute this gap to multiple factors including limited awareness about treatment options, social stigma surrounding mental health, insufficient availability of trained mental health professionals, and barriers to accessing care in many regions. The low treatment rate suggests a critical need for improved mental health infrastructure and public education campaigns to encourage those suffering from anxiety to seek professional help.
