Apple's Minions project taps idle Mac computers to power AI workloads

Apple is exploring a novel approach to harness unused computing power from Mac devices. The company's research project, called Minions, distributes artificial intelligence inference workloads across multiple connected Macs running Apple Silicon chips.
The system creates a shared pool of graphics processing unit capacity by leveraging idle machines across a network. This approach allows Apple to utilize the dormant computational resources in its ecosystem for AI tasks without requiring dedicated hardware infrastructure.
The research represents Apple's broader push into AI optimization as the technology becomes increasingly central to consumer devices and services. By tapping into the existing installed base of Apple Silicon Macs, the company could potentially reduce the need for expensive specialized servers while improving efficiency across its computing ecosystem.
