Assam Court Sentences Six to Life for 1995 Witchcraft-Related Murder

An Assam court has sentenced six men to life imprisonment for the 1995 murder of an 80-year-old woman who had been accused of practising witchcraft. The case, which originated in Kamrup district, resulted in the conviction of all six accused after decades since the incident.
The verdict marks a significant prosecution in a case rooted in superstition-driven violence. Such crimes, often fuelled by beliefs in witchcraft, remain a concern in several parts of India, particularly in northeastern states.
