Assam Hydrocarbon Policy 2026 Comes Into Force To Boost Energy Self-Reliance

The Assam Hydrocarbon Exploration, Production and Upstream Ecosystem Development Policy, 2026 has been notified, with Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri calling it a significant stride toward strengthening India's energy security. Puri said the policy aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of making India energy self-reliant while accelerating development in the Northeast region.
The policy establishes an investor-friendly framework designed to reduce procedural delays, facilitate regulatory clearances, and encourage adoption of advanced exploration technologies. It aims to unlock Assam's untapped hydrocarbon reserves and attract investment in oil and natural gas exploration and production. Puri credited Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for leading the initiative.
The policy is expected to boost domestic energy production, strengthen energy security, and generate employment opportunities. It also seeks to increase economic activity in Assam and enhance the state's contribution to India's petroleum sector.
