Assam, Meghalaya End Vehicle Blockade; Schedule Transport Talks

Assam-registered vehicles will be permitted to enter Meghalaya starting Monday, following a decision by drivers' associations in the state. The Assam State Drivers Association president announced that the All Khasi Drivers Association has agreed to allow transit of Assam vehicles to Shillong and other areas.
Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar held a high-level meeting with drivers' associations on Sunday evening in Shillong. He announced that Transport Commissioners from both Assam and Meghalaya, along with representatives of tourist taxi associations, will meet on September 10 to resolve long-standing grievances over cross-border commercial transport and establish a lasting mechanism for vehicle movement between the states.
The meeting follows complaints from Meghalaya-based commercial vehicle operators about harassment and operational difficulties while travelling through Assam. Dhar said the September 10 discussion will focus on strengthening coordination between the two state administrations to facilitate smoother movement of commercial vehicles.
