Assam's Saraighat Bridge Completes ₹7 Crore Rehabilitation After 60 Years of Service

Assam's Saraighat Bridge, commissioned in 1962, has completed a ₹7 crore rehabilitation project aimed at restoring its structural integrity after over six decades of continuous service. The work, which began on July 13 and concluded on September 15, 2026, focused on addressing damage identified during inspections, including issues with the road deck, expansion joints, and supporting steel members.
The comprehensive rehabilitation involved repairing eight of the bridge's 11 expansion joints, which manage movement caused by temperature fluctuations. Water seepage through cracks and damaged concrete sections had accelerated deterioration, prompting railway authorities to move beyond routine maintenance. According to Northeast Frontier Railway's Chief Public Relations Officer, the repairs have strengthened critical structural components where distress was detected.
The Saraighat Bridge is a vital link connecting Assam and the Northeast to the rest of India. The completed rehabilitation work is expected to enhance safety and reliability of train operations on the Delhi-Guwahati route while ensuring sustained connectivity for the region.
