Bank Strikes Scheduled from September 11; Four Major Lenders Issue Service Alerts

Four major public-sector banks—Indian Bank, UCO Bank, Bank of Maharashtra and Punjab National Bank—have alerted customers of possible service disruptions during nationwide strikes called by employee unions. The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), representing seven employee and officer organisations, has announced a one-day strike on September 11, followed by strikes on September 28, 29 and 30. An indefinite strike has been threatened from October 26, 2026, if demands remain unmet.
The unions are demanding a five-day banking week and changes to the government's revised performance-linked incentive scheme for public-sector bank employees. They have raised concerns over unresolved employment, welfare and compensation issues. The government has placed the performance-linked incentive scheme for 2025-26 on hold following discussions with bank employee representatives.
