Former West Bengal Assembly Deputy Speaker Asish Banerjee was found dead at a Trinamool Congress office near his residence in Rampurhat, Birbhum district. Police recovered his body hanging inside the party office and sent it for autopsy. A purported suicide note was also found at the scene and is under examination.
Banerjee, a five-time MLA and close associate of TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, had served as Deputy Speaker and held ministerial positions. In the 2026 Assembly elections, he lost to BJP candidate Dhruva Saha by over 24,000 votes. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari speculated that corrupt elements within TMC may have threatened Banerjee, while former CM Mamata Banerjee expressed deep distress, noting the emotional strain he appeared to have endured in his final days.
