Bhakti movement in Tamilakam examined as form of resistance to power

Raghavan Srinivasan has positioned the Bhakti movement in Tamilakam as an early instance of resistance against established power structures. The scholarly work examines how devotional practices and movements served as vehicles for challenging existing hierarchies and institutional authority in the region.
However, the study has been noted for leaving several important issues either untouched or addressed only in passing. Critics point out that while the thesis presents an interesting framework for understanding Bhakti as dissent, deeper exploration of certain dimensions would strengthen the overall argument.
The Bhakti movement, which emerged in medieval South India, remains a significant area of historical and cultural study, particularly in understanding how religious and social movements intersected with power dynamics in Tamilakam.
