Bismillah Khan's Family Struggles Financially Despite Shehnai Maestro's Bharat Ratna Legacy

The family of Ustad Bismillah Khan, the Bharat Ratna awardee who elevated the shehnai to international concert stages, is grappling with financial difficulties and a lack of official support. Born in Dumraon, Bihar in 1916, Bismillah Khan famously played Raag Kafi from the Red Fort on India's Independence Day in 1947, a moment that became emblematic of India's composite culture.
Despite his monumental contributions to classical music and numerous national honours including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and Bharat Ratna, his descendants now face hardship. Khan remained deeply attached to Varanasi and the Ganga throughout his life, rejecting opportunities to settle permanently abroad. His legacy as a musician who transformed the shehnai from a ceremonial instrument into a respected art form continues to be celebrated.
