BMC Plans AI-Powered CCTV System to Track Crowds at Mumbai Tourist Sites

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed launching an AI-powered CCTV-based Tourist Footfall Monitoring System at major tourist and religious sites across Mumbai on a pilot basis. The proposal, moved by BJP corporator Tajinder Singh Tiwana, will be placed before the civic body's next General Body meeting for approval.
The initiative aims to address crowd management challenges at key locations, especially during major festivals like Ganeshotsav and Navratri that attract large numbers of devotees. The system will integrate AI with existing CCTV networks to generate real-time data on visitor numbers, crowd density and movement patterns.
Civic officials expect the real-time data will enable better crowd management, improve deployment of sanitation services and public utilities, enhance security measures, and strengthen traffic management at Mumbai's busy tourist and religious destinations.
