BMC Directs Mumbai University To Allow Feeding Of Community Dogs At Kalina Campus

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has instructed the University of Mumbai to ensure community dogs on its Kalina campus receive food and water, and that people feeding them are not restricted from entering the premises. The civic body's Veterinary Health Department said the university must comply with the Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023 and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
A BMC survey identified 94 community dogs on the campus, of which 78 have been sterilised and 16 are awaiting the procedure. The civic body has been conducting sterilisation and anti-rabies vaccination programmes as part of its population-control effort, with surveys showing community dog density on Mumbai streets has declined by 22-28 over the past decade.
