BMC Orders 24x7 Response to Contaminated-Water Complaints After 1,514 Cases

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has mandated round-the-clock action on contaminated-water complaints following 1,514 cases reported in the first eight months of 2026. While contaminated samples fell to 0.28% in 2025-26 from 0.46% in preceding years, the issue persists in several areas.
At Wednesday's Standing Committee meeting, the BMC announced a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for coordinated response involving ward officials, leak-detection teams, sewerage, drainage, solid waste management and health departments. The protocol covers complaint registration, contamination tracing, repairs and water certification.
B ward (Dongri and Umarkhadi) recorded the highest contamination at 4.03% in 2025-26, while H-East (Bandra East, Khar East and Santacruz East) saw sharp rises to 3.11%. Leaking service connections through drains and marshy soil have been identified as key risks, with residents advised to boil water until contamination is resolved.
