BMC pushes green Ganeshotsav as 98% idol immersions shift to artificial lakes

The Bombay Municipal Corporation has intensified efforts to promote eco-friendly Ganpati celebrations in Mumbai. Additional Municipal Commissioner Avinash Dhakane stated that citizens now show greater awareness of environmental conservation during the festival.
Following Bombay High Court directions and CPCB guidelines, the BMC has mandated that idols below 6 feet in height be immersed only in artificial ponds. In the previous year, 98% of idol immersions in Mumbai took place in these artificial lakes. The remaining idols above 6 feet were immersed in natural water bodies.
The BMC has expanded its infrastructure this year, increasing artificial pond locations from 298 to 383 across Mumbai. The corporation also retrieves and transports remains of immersed idols to a dedicated disposal site to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
