BMC Launches Random Transfer System for Engineers After Political Interference Charges

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has introduced an "Employee Transfer System Based on Randomization" for Junior Engineers, Sub-Engineers and Assistant Engineers, following allegations of political interference in transfers. The move comes a day after an RTI activist exposed details of 225 officer transfers involving political recommendations.
According to a BMC circular dated September 2, engineers who have completed three years in the same department must submit transfer preferences online between September 5-20, 2026. The system aims to bring transparency and curb political recommendations and favouritism. RTI activist Anil Galgali welcomed the initiative as a step towards accountability and fairness.
The decision follows fresh allegations of a "cash for transfer" racket within the BMC. BJP MLA Mihir Kotecha has sought a detailed inquiry by the Chief Secretary into alleged financial irregularities in engineering transfers.
