BMC to Install Steel Nets Across Mumbai Nullahs by May 2028 to Check Garbage Dumping

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has announced a May 2028 deadline to install steel nets across all major nullahs in Mumbai's suburbs to curb garbage dumping. Steel nets already installed at Main Avenue Nullah and South Avenue Nullah have successfully reduced indiscriminate waste disposal, according to civic officials.
The BMC is now expanding the initiative to the Vakola River, where heavy dumping near Dnyaneshwar slum has severely polluted the waterway. Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Bangar stated that 10-foot-high steel nets have prevented residents from dumping garbage into waterways and the measure has proved effective in tackling a long-standing problem.
However, the plan faces challenges in densely populated areas like Mankhurd and Dharavi, where huts are built along nullah walls, making net installation difficult due to encroachments and limited space. Despite annual pre-monsoon desilting efforts, garbage dumping continues to choke city nullahs, raising waterlogging risks during monsoons.
