Gandhinagar Court Jails Wire Columnist Ravi Nair for Missing Hearing in Adani Defamation Case

A Gandhinagar court in Gujarat sent OCCRP partner journalist and Wire columnist Ravi Nair to jail on 17 September for missing a hearing in a criminal defamation case filed by the Adani Group. A non-bailable warrant had been issued against him on 3 September following his absence from court, despite Nair's claims that he regularly attended hearings.
On 19 September, the Gujarat High Court issued a notice on Nair's plea challenging the warrant. Justice M K Thakker posted the matter for hearing on 21 September, noting the urgency of the case. Nair contended that the warrant was issued without prior summons or notice, and that he should have been issued a bailable warrant first before a non-bailable one.
Nair was convicted in February 2026 by a magistrate court in Gandhinagar and sentenced to one year's simple imprisonment in the defamation case filed by Adani Enterprises Limited.
