Centre approves stricter law against exam paper leaks with 10-year jail term

The central cabinet on Friday approved a new draft bill imposing stricter penalties against those involved in competitive exam paper leaks, including NEET. The proposed legislation provides for imprisonment up to 10 years and fines up to 10 crore rupees for guilty parties. The government aims to deter such crimes and strengthen public confidence in the examination system.
Before 2024, exam paper leaks and malpractice cases were handled under the Indian Penal Code, IT Act, and state-specific anti-cheating laws. No dedicated central legislation existed exclusively for addressing paper leaks and exam irregularities across the country. Investigative agencies relied on various sections of the IPC to prosecute offenders.
The new draft is expected to be introduced in Parliament next week, marking a significant tightening of legal provisions against examination fraud.
