CBI Constable and Lawyer Held in Rs 6-Lakh Bribery Case

The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested a constable posted at its Bank Security and Fraud Branch in New Delhi and a lawyer in an alleged Rs 6-lakh bribery case following an internal anti-corruption operation. The action came after the agency received information that constable Jay Kumar Singh, in connivance with a middleman, had allegedly demanded Rs 20 lakh from Kolkata-based businessmen Ram Chandra Daga and his son Basant Daga in return for not implicating them in a case.
According to the FIR, Singh allegedly visited Kolkata on September 21 on an official visit and met Ram Chandra Daga, claiming to have information about alleged illegal activities involving him and others. He subsequently met Daga's lawyer to discuss the issue, after which the lawyer travelled to New Delhi to "amicably settle the matter." The agency alleged that a West Bengal-based middleman was fully aware of the matter and expected a share of the bribe. At a meeting in a mall in southwest Delhi, the constable allegedly negotiated the bribe amount down to Rs 6 lakh. The CBI registered an FIR against six persons, including the constable, the businessmen, the middleman and others, under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The CBI launched surveillance on the constable's alleged activities as part of its "zero tolerance" policy towards corruption and its internal counter-graft mechanism. The Anti-Corruption Unit team arrested the constable and the businessman's lawyer at the location last Sunday.
