CBIC Chairman: AI and tech to enable cargo scanning without disrupting trade

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) is moving customs enforcement away from physical inspections towards intelligence-led, technology-driven risk assessment, according to the CBIC Chairman.
The shift aims to leverage artificial intelligence and technology for cargo scanning while minimising disruption to trade flows. The objective extends beyond increasing seizures and arrests to targeting and disrupting illicit supply chains at their source.
This modernisation reflects customs authorities' effort to balance security and enforcement with facilitating legitimate trade and commerce.
