FSSAI proposes ban on added sugars in infant food for babies up to 6 months

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has proposed a ban on adding fructose and sucrose in infant food products. The proposal targets foods intended for infants up to six months of age, a critical period in child development.
The draft amendment aims to strengthen nutritional safeguards during this vulnerable developmental phase. By restricting added sugars, the FSSAI seeks to protect infants from early exposure to sweetened products that may establish unhealthy dietary habits.
The authority has opened the proposal for public consultation, inviting stakeholders, manufacturers, and health professionals to submit their objections and suggestions on the draft amendment.
