CBIC warns against 'misleading' GST revenue comparisons

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has cautioned against comparing GST revenue figures using different tax bases, calling such comparisons misleading. The board stressed that growth calculations must be made on a comparable basis to enable meaningful analysis.
The CBIC's statement comes as the compensation cess was discontinued on most items from September 2025. Since then, the government has collected no compensation cess. The board emphasised that fair analysis requires comparing equivalent datasets to arrive at accurate insights into GST performance.
