Former Officials Call for Census Data Confidentiality Amid NPR, NRC Concerns

Former government officials have called for maintaining confidentiality of Census data, expressing concerns over potential links with the National Population Register (NPR) and National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Historical records indicate that the 1951 NRC was prepared across the country by extracting data from Census schedules. The countrywide NRC was never published, except in undivided Assam, which at that time also included Manipur and Tripura.
The statement reflects ongoing concerns about how Census information might be used in future population verification exercises.
