Centre opposes commutation of Balwant Singh Rajoana's death sentence in Beant Singh assassination case

Balwant Singh Rajoana, convicted in the 1995 assassination of Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, has approached the Supreme Court challenging the delay in deciding his mercy petition pending before the President since 2012. Rajoana, who has been in custody for over 30 years, sought intervention in the protracted process.
The Union government has opposed commutation of Rajoana's death sentence. The case involves the high-profile killing of Beant Singh, a significant political event in Punjab's history. Rajoana's plea highlights the extended judicial and executive procedures surrounding capital punishment cases in India.
