Sharia Courts Have No Legal Authority To Grant Divorce, Rules Chhattisgarh High Court

The Chhattisgarh High Court ruled that Sharia courts do not possess legal authority to grant divorces. The observation emerged while the court disposed of a writ petition filed by a Raipur-based Muslim woman who challenged an order issued by the Idara-E-Sharia Islami Court on January 18, 2022.
The ruling clarifies the legal boundaries of religious courts in India and reinforces that divorce matters must be adjudicated through constitutionally established judicial mechanisms.
