Supreme Court Constitutes Standing Committee on Judicial Well-being

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has constituted a Standing Committee on Judicial Well-being under the Supreme Court to institutionalize support for the mental and physical health of judicial officers. The committee, established on World Mental Health Day, recognizes the professional and personal challenges faced by members of the judiciary.
The Standing Committee will be chaired by Supreme Court Judge Justice K.V. Viswanathan and comprises experts in psychiatry and psychology, a Supreme Court Advocate-on-Record, and a judicial officer from the Supreme Court's Centre for Research and Planning. Members include Dr. Savita Malhotra, former Dean of PGIMER Chandigarh; psychologist Rajat Mitra; Advocate-on-Record Mrinal Kanwar; and Aarti Singh, Registrar at the Centre for Research and Planning.
Judicial officers operate under demanding conditions marked by high caseloads, extended hours, complex responsibilities, and administrative obligations. The committee aims to establish a systematic mechanism to identify and address concerns affecting judges' well-being, recognizing that their wellness directly impacts their capacity to discharge judicial functions effectively.
