Congress criticises PM Modi for failing to leverage G-7 summit talks with Trump

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G-7 summit in Avignon, France on June 17. Congress responded the next day, stating it had expected Modi to use the opportunity to robustly defend India's energy sovereignty, economic interests, and strategic autonomy, but found no evidence of this during the summit.
Congress foreign affairs chief and former external affairs minister Salman Khurshid issued a statement saying the party hoped Modi would use the G-7 summit to establish India's leadership role in the Global South and firmly protect national interests. Instead, Khurshied said the summit revealed a troubling gap between claims and outcomes.
