Congress MP Saleng Sangma sought foreign pressure on FCRA bill, backed by Christian bodies

Congress MP Saleng Sangma triggered political controversy by seeking international intervention against the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026. The Tura MP acknowledged approaching representatives of the US, UK, Australia, Korea, Mexico and African countries to pressure the government to withdraw the proposed legislation.
Sangma, supported by Christian missionary bodies and Northeast leaders, claimed the bill would harm institutions run by the Christian community. He justified foreign outreach, stating the government would not heed domestic opposition representations. However, the government describes the bill as national security legislation aimed at regulating—not banning—foreign contributions and ensuring transparency in fund flows.
The proposed amendments are currently being examined by a 31-member Joint Parliamentary Committee, including opposition members, after parliament referred it for detailed scrutiny following opposition demands.
