Counterfeit rabies vaccine racket exposed in Delhi; fake Abhayrab vials seized

Delhi police's crime branch and drug control department raided an unlicensed residential location in Mukherjee Nagar on April 22, 2026, uncovering a counterfeit drug network. Authorities seized multiple vials of fake Abhayrab rabies vaccine bearing batch number KE25012 and arrested four individuals in connection with the operation.

Abhayrab, manufactured by Indian Immunological Limited (IIL) through its Human Biologicals Institute, commands approximately 40 per cent of India's domestic rabies vaccine market. The discovery of counterfeit versions raises serious concerns about healthcare safety and public health surveillance systems.

The seizure highlights the growing menace of spurious pharmaceuticals in India and questions the effectiveness of regulatory oversight in preventing illegal vaccine manufacturing and distribution.
