Delhi High Court introduces new Senior Advocate designation rules for 2026

The Delhi High Court notified the High Court of Delhi Designation of Senior Advocate Rules, 2026, on 3 September 2026, replacing the previous 2024 framework. The new rules, framed under Section 16(2) of the Advocates Act, 1961 and Section 7 of the Delhi High Court Act, 1966, apply across the entire Delhi High Court jurisdiction.
Under the new framework, a Permanent Secretariat headed by a Registrar-rank officer will manage the designation process and invite applications at least annually. Applicants must have practiced for at least 10 years as an advocate, be Bar Council enrolled, practice primarily before the High Court or district courts, and be at least 40 years old—unless the Full Court grants an exception. The application window will be at least 21 days. Canvassing for designation remains a disqualification ground.
