Former IAS Officer Devasish Sharma Wins Assam's Nagaon Seat; Built Cancer Care Network in Mumbai

Former IAS officer and BJP candidate Devasish Sharma, 59, has secured a decisive victory in Assam's Nagaon parliamentary constituency. Sharma maintains a deep connection with Mumbai, where he served as Deputy Resident Commissioner and later Joint Resident Commissioner at Assam Bhawan in Navi Mumbai from 2003 to 2021.
During his Mumbai tenure, Sharma went beyond official duties to support Assamese cancer patients travelling for treatment at Tata Memorial Hospital. He arranged accommodation, meals and transport, often personally receiving patients at railway stations. Witnessing their financial hardships led him to establish Deepsikha, a cancer care organisation, in July 2004. During the Covid-19 lockdown in May 2020, Sharma coordinated bus convoys to help stranded cancer patients return to Assam, accompanying them on the 2,731-km journey across six states.
Sharma also transformed Assam Bhawan into a cultural hub, hosting Bihu celebrations, Durga Puja and community gatherings. An accomplished guitarist and singer, he performed songs by renowned Assamese musicians. After returning to Assam in 2021, he served as Guwahati Municipal Corporation Commissioner and District Commissioner before his parliamentary victory.
