Eggs, Brinjals Thrown at TMC MP Mahua Moitra During Party Meeting in Krishnanagar; She Blames BJP Workers

A fresh political confrontation unfolded in West Bengal on Wednesday after Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra alleged that BJP supporters attacked the building where she was meeting party workers in Krishnanagar by throwing eggs and brinjals. The incident was streamed live by the MP on social media, showing protesters gathered outside the venue shouting slogans and waving black flags.
During the live broadcast, Moitra claimed the protesters were BJP workers and criticised the law-and-order situation, alleging that police failed to act immediately despite the disturbance. According to her, security personnel reached the location after a delay, while the protesters continued to target the building. In the video, she was seen taking cover near a window as objects were hurled towards the premises.
The TMC leader also claimed that despite informing senior police officials, the crowd was not dispersed quickly. She said she would not leave the area or seek additional police protection, asserting that Krishnanagar was her parliamentary constituency and that she intended to remain there despite the protest.
Later, Moitra posted another message on social media, alleging that police had remained passive while the protest continued for hours and expressing concern that she could face further attacks while leaving the venue.
The latest confrontation comes weeks after Moitra had alleged that BJP Mahila Morcha workers gathered outside a court in Krishnanagar with eggs and tomatoes ahead of her scheduled appearance in another case. She had not attended that hearing.
The incident occurred on the same day the Calcutta High Court expressed concern over the growing number of egg-hurling incidents involving Trinamool Congress leaders. The court observed that such attacks had become a serious social concern and directed the West Bengal government to submit a report detailing the number of cases registered, arrests made and the action taken against those responsible.
The court's observations came during the hearing of a petition linked to similar incidents involving TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. In recent months, several Trinamool leaders have faced protests where eggs and other objects were thrown at them during public appearances, reflecting continuing political tensions in the state following the Assembly elections. The Trinamool Congress has repeatedly accused the BJP of orchestrating these protests, while the BJP has rejected those allegations.
