Indian Express' ECI crisis narrative challenged as sensationalism

The Indian Express published a series of reports in September claiming an unprecedented rupture within the Election Commission of India, alleging that Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had objected at least 14 times over 10 months to various administrative decisions.
The reports constructed a larger narrative around these objections, suggesting powers were being centralised, field-level officers bypassed, and the institution facing breakdown. However, the Election Commission responded directly, stating that written notes, observations and internal checks are standard constitutional features of its multi-member body.
The ECI clarified that operational queries during draft stages and differing views during institutional deliberation represent normal administrative practice before final decisions are taken, substantially complicating the dramatic narrative presented by the publication.
